Award-winning data author announced as keynote for Crimson’s Conference
Crimson is pleased to announce that award-winning writer Dr Ben Goldacre will be the keynote speaker at Crimson’s Innovation Conference in 2019.
Ben, who is also a doctor, broadcaster and Senior Clinical Research Fellow at University of Oxford, will be debating the famous revolutionary promise “We all know that data can change the world” but also, crucially, the various ways that data can be used to deceive: covering dodgy graphs, misleading analyses, and exquisitely deceptive artificial intelligence models.
It is Ben’s belief that “the more technical the world becomes, the more we must all raise our game, to avoid being caught out by digital snake oil”. His speech promises to be a lively, humorous, and thought-provoking presentation.
The Crimson Innovation Conference is a day-long thought-leadership event designed for executive-level technologists. This year’s theme is ‘Navigating the data universe’ and a range of CIOs, leadership coaches, IT recruitment experts, and academics, will be discussing how better return on investment can be generated through using predictive analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning. Ben specialises in unpicking scientific claims made by scaremongering journalists, government reports, pharmaceutical corporations, PR companies and quacks. His books have sold over 600,000 copies worldwide and have been published in 31 languages.
His academic and policy work is in epidemiology and evidence-based medicine, where he works on better uses of routinely collected electronic health data, variation in care, access to clinical trial data, efficient trial design, and retracted papers. He has written policy papers for the UK government and received an MBE in 2018 “For Services to Evidence in Policy”.
